How Mill Hill International Supports Rapid Progress in English for Global Learners
For international families choosing a UK school, English language support is often one of the biggest priorities. At Mill Hill International it’s not just a feature of the curriculum; it’s a foundation of the school’s entire ethos. According to the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) most recent report (January 2024), our provision for English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a “significant strength,” helping pupils make rapid progress and achieve exceptional academic outcomes.
Unlike many schools where EAL provision is confined to a specialist department, we have adopted a truly integrated model. Every subject teacher receives specialist training in supporting EAL learners within the classroom, ensuring that English language development is embedded across all areas of study, from mathematics to music.
At the same time, pupils receive targeted support from a team of dedicated EAL teachers, who work closely with both learners and staff to identify individual needs. This dual approach allows pupils to make meaningful progress, not only in everyday conversation but also in the precise academic vocabulary needed for subjects like science, history, and geography.
Another standout feature is our focus on oracy, which is the ability to speak fluently, coherently and with confidence. Pupils are regularly encouraged to take part in group discussions, presentations, and drama productions, all of which build both their English proficiency and their self-esteem.
This commitment to language learning translates directly into academic performance. The ISI report confirms that GCSE results among EAL pupils are significantly above the national average, with 91.7% of all grades awarded 9-4 (A*-C), and 46.3% at the highest grades 7-9 (A*-A).
Students typically secure places at leading independent schools and sixth forms, including Mill Hill School, Westminster School, City of London School for Girls, Dulwich College, and Lancing College.
Our diverse student body, representing over 30 countries, fosters a naturally immersive environment where English is the shared language of the classroom and boarding houses. Pupils learn to collaborate across cultures, developing lifelong communication and leadership skills.
Ultimately, the strength of our EAL programme within Mill Hill International lies in its purpose: not just to teach English, but to equip pupils for life in a global, English-speaking world. From the classroom to the boarding house, every element of school life is designed to help international students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
