Pastoral Care
Mill Hill International is a close-knit community and we pride ourselves on knowing each and every pupil’s individual needs, hopes and dreams. Ensuring our pupils are happy and thriving is central to our approach. We aim to instil values and inspire minds by providing excellence in education, bringing out the best in every individual child, building resilience, developing self-confidence, and building a sense of community with awareness of environmental sustainability.
We understand that all our pupils are unique, not least because they come from different countries and cultures. So, we tailor our care in the school and in the boarding houses to meet their needs. Our pastoral systems are designed to support the child and the wider family when required. Pupils and parents are encouraged to share any concerns or worries, and we spend time personalising the pastoral care to address them. This makes for happy young adults and a thriving caring community that proactively provides support.
Tutor Involvement
Before the child joins, all teachers take time to become familiar with the personal background and context to design the personalised pastoral care and then to deliver it in all interactions. This embeds care into the community’s culture and all that we do.
Each pupil’s pastoral care is driven by their tutor; at Mill Hill International every day begins with tutor time and the familiar and friendly faces of a small tutor group. Theme weeks are brought to life in daily tutorials covering a wide range of topics and include sessions on physical and mental health, self-esteem, and good citizenship.
Tutors maintain an overview of the pupil’s school experience; they will come to know their tutees incredibly well and will always be on hand to provide support and guidance. Tutors work closely with boarding and day housemasters and housemistresses. This environment encourages pupils to have their say in one of our many avenues for pupil voice, by becoming Prefects, Peer Mentors, Digital Ambassadors, Maths Pioneers, Science Champions, Young Interpreters, Sports Ambassadors and Eco Warriors or by joining the Student Council. This ensures that pupils thrive academically, personally, and socially. Tutors work closely with subject teachers and Head of Year. The entire pastoral care system is led by the Deputy Head (Pastoral) who knows every child personally and encourages pupils to reach out at anytime.
Individual Focus
Our pupils also develop social awareness which creates a sense of ease with one another as they get involved in a host of community partnerships and fundraising initiatives to give back to society. As a multicultural school, we embrace many faiths while creating space for others. Social, moral, spiritual and cultural awareness is developed through a range of alternating weekly assemblies and chapel service.
Our proactive approach to pastoral support is focused on the individual child’s talents, interests and needs. We give our pupils the tools to become the best versions of themselves through the highs and lows of school life, both in and out of the classroom, and provide a support structure founded on the positive relationships forged between pupils, teachers and parents. Here at Mill Hill International, we seek to partner with parents and guardians, listen to and learn about each child in considering how best to deliver our pastoral care.
In the vibrant tapestry of Mill Hill International, one resounding truth stands out: the wellbeing of every pupil matters deeply. Each pupil's unique journey unfolds in this environment, one dream at a time, supported by prompt personalised care.
