English Language Acquisition
As an international school, English Language Acquisition is at the very heart of all we do. Experts in multilingualism and additional language acquisition, we understand the needs of our multilingual (EAL) learners. Our teachers adapt their subject teaching to ensure that the curriculum is accessible to all our pupils and the English department actively support teachers in that endeavour.
On arrival all pupils are tested and receive a score on the CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference). They are then placed accordingly onto the correct pathway in terms of whether they study for a First or a Second Language English IGCSE. Progress is monitored closely and pupils who make swift progress move promptly to a class that is better suited to their level.
Recognising the importance of every pupil’s own language, we welcome and nurture their mother tongues (L1), understanding that this forms an important part of their identity and that potentially each pupil has a ‘fund of knowledge’ within that language to be tapped into and used as a valuable resource. Multilingualism is celebrated and recognised as the gift that it is within our School.
Additional English Language Support
Additional English language support is available to all pupils and is very much tailored to the individual. The English Department run a range of Clubs and Societies, from Book Club, Young Interpreters, Young Reporters, Multilingual Prep Club and Debate Club. Each member of our highly specialised team also offers individual support to pupils as required, ensuring pupils make the requisite progress to perform at their best in their examinations and that they can engage proactively and with ease in wider school life.
Our international school offers pupils a unique experience where pupils can improve their English, advance their knowledge in a range of academic subjects whilst receiving expert support in terms of their English, and participate fully in all that our vibrant community has to offer.
We were very proud that our EAL was recognised in our latest ISI Inspection. The report highlights many of our strengths and identifies our English is an Additional Language (EAL) as a Significant Strength of the School which is a testament to all the hard work which goes on at the School.
