For this week’s Meet the Pupil, we’re delighted to introduce Roman R in Collinson House, a Prefect at Mill Hill International.

We caught up with him to hear about his experience at Mill Hill International.

Tell us about yourself.

I tend to approach most things in a complicated (detailed) way, whether it’s Maths, Sports, or anything else. That’s just how I navigate life. It requires resilience, but ultimately, that challenge is what keeps me going, even to this day. One of my favourite activities is running or spending time reading news.

Have you ever taken on a leadership role in school, and what did you learn from that experience?

I’ve taken on multiple roles in school, but what I’ve found truly valuable isn’t the badges, it’s the experiences. Running my Kahoot! Club every week, helping redesign the common room, and now co-organising a Table Tennis Tournament with Jack S, which has over 35 participants, have all been incredible experiences. What I’ve realised is that the memories and emotions I’ve gained from these opportunities of helping others are far more meaningful than any official title.

Are you involved in any school clubs or societies? What do you enjoy most about them?

Every Friday, I play in Raymond’s Badminton club, where he and Jack taught me how to play. Now, I can compete with more experienced players, and I get to enjoy the game to the fullest. I learnt that trying something new is fun especially if you are receiving help from your friends.

What is your favourite subject?

When I first joined Mill Hill International, my only real passion was tennis. Now, I compete in table Tennis, Badminton, and Basketball at a solid level.

Who is someone you look up to, and what do you admire about them?

One of my English and Literature teachers is Ms Bano, her ability is to make every lesson feel like it’s not a lesson in a positive way. Her ideas go far beyond the mark scheme, and she’s always an interesting person to talk to, which inspires me because combining your work and passion is very rare in modern world.

If you could give one piece of advice to younger pupils in school, what would it be?

Try as many new things as possible. Eventually, you’ll find something you’re passionate about, and that will make all the effort worthwhile. There is a “more than enough” opportunities in our school, which can fit most of the requests on this level, even if something new is discovered nothing stops you from doing it independently or organising it by yourself.
